We are so fortunate to have the Withlacoochee State Trail available for our use
We are so fortunate to have the Withlacoochee State Trail available for our use. The Trail falls under the responsibility of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Recreation and Parks.
The woman with hands-on responsibility is Trail Specialist Dianne Drye, supported by Trail Rangers Dean and Jim. Of course there are lots of volunteers who assist with maintenance, rides and special projects, most often sourced from the members of Rails to Trails of the Withlacoochee, Inc.
They are vigilant in addressing maintenance issues. A few weeks ago we had a wild thunderstorm which caused a tree to fall and block the Trail. I and my friends walked our bicycles around the debris early in the morning and by the time we returned just a few hours later there was nothing left of the tree. Staff and/or volunteers had “been there and done that.”
The staff also maintains the various restrooms and chemical toilets, keeping them clean and stocked. How nice!
So when you see trail staff in their distinctive greenish-gray uniforms or volunteer crews in their orange tees, express your appreciation for their work as you walk, jog or pedal by!
